When Features Aren't Features

#Bored, #Work, #Computers, #Dumb

Everyone loves a bullet point. Marketing especially. Showing a prospective customer advantages of a product quickly is the name of the game in advertising. But it seems more and more what should be standard in our products are touted as extra features.

How Vista Changed My Mind

#Vista, #Computers, #Windows

Now I have for a long while been very against Windows Vista: it seemed like an unnecessary, fancy-looking power hog. I have used Windows XP for many a year, and although been frustrated with it at times, it always seemed to be fairly rock-solid. I had no desire to upgrade to an OS that seemed mostly bells & whistles.

And then I did. And I realized, it's not bad.

Antec 900 Computer Case $70 @ Frys.com

#Antec 900, #Computer Case, #Computers, #Frys.com

Frys.com has the Antec 900 computer case on sale for $69.99, which sucks because I just bought this case from them not a few weeks ago for $20 more. Too bad they don't price adjust :P
In comparison, Newegg has the case for $140.
It's pretty nice case, with lots of blue LEDS and huge fans. It's also pretty quiet, easy to install into, and I have had no issues with it since I bought it to build my brothers computer. Check after the break for a copy paste job of the details, or click the source to pick one up right now.

A Lesson In Windows Computer Networking

#Windows, #Computers, #Networking, #File Sharing

Okay, I just had a hell of a time trying to get my computers to network together, and I figured, since this seems to happen every so often to me, and I know many others have this trouble, I'll write a little article about it, so neither I nor anyone else can ever forget. I'm hoping this will be a definitive, one-stop-fix all tutorial for Windows Network Troubleshooting. If interested, check after the break.

Acer 22" Monitor $190

#Best Buy, #Acer, #Monitor, #Widescreen, #Computers

Best Buy is having a two day sale for Memorial Day Weekend (as most stores are), and included is a pretty decent widescreen Acer Monitor. At 22" , you probably will be hard pressed to find a better deal on a screen this size. If you're lucky, the might let you use this 10%/12% off coupon (B&M only, no online).

Full specs after the break.

Xerox Inkless Printer

#Inkless Printer, #Xerox, #Technology, #Computers, #E-paper

Xerox has developed an "inkless" printer, one which instead uses UV light to change the color of certain molecules on a piece of inkless paper. Working sort of like certain sunglasses which change from light to dark depending on the lighting conditions, inkless paper is mostly useful because it is reusable - the change in color of the words on the page is not permanent, but rather fades away in 16-24 hours. it can also be instantly erased. This means offices which previously would print a document or email, use it for a minute or two, and then trash it, can now simply reinsert the page into the printer, saving money and the environment.
Of course, there are drawbacks. The technology is still a few years away from complete fruition, and not all the kinks have been worked out. Theoretically the printout could be in color, but at the moment, that is not on Xerox's list of things to do; it is only a black-and-white document printing for now. And the length of time before fading is being lengthend, but for now it seems the paper won't serve as a storage for important, long-term writings (such as our articles).
But, more than technical imperfections, are the logical ones. The paper is supposed to be used in offices which often print and trash, but this type of paper would not be eligible for markings of any sort; it would no longer be reusable. So in an office where a memo might be printed and marked up a bit at a meeting, one now must simply imagine what might have been. And, since Xerox is developing this to be an add-on to existing technology (they say there will not be a stand-alone printer specifically for inkless paper, but rather simply a UV light device to attach), one wonders how easily it might be to mistake the papers in the tray; those legal documents you needed for an eternity may now be visible for perhaps a day, if printed on the wrong paper. Of course, in business with shady practices, this might be the solution to replace the shredder.
Inkless paper is a neat technology for sure, but not one to replace printing except in small one-time capacities. E-paper is a much more promising lead, with a folding paper-like screen which can hold text, images, whatever, and what's more hold all of it at once. I for one would rather have e-paper than a UV Light attachment any day. But then I don't usually print things out just to throw them away. Any of our readers think this inkless paper is more than just a cool toy?

Wiindows OS

#Wii, #Wiimote, #Wiindows OS, #Windows, #Computers, #PC, #Emulation, #Roms, #Video Games

If you haven't been lucky enough to buy a Wii of your own, you could always pretend, and I don't mean in the dorky wave-your-tv-remote around sort of way. The good folks over at Wiili.org have devised a neat program dubbed the Wii OS (but we prefer Wiindows OS) for emulating the Wii menu on your computer screen. And if you have bluetooth capabilities, you can even use a Wiimote with it, completing the experience. Check after the break to see it in action, complete with mumbly narration.
